Disaster Recovery: Why you need it and what to ask

Backup and Disaster Recovery isn’t just about insurance, think about these numbers for a moment;

  • 90% of businesses losing data from a disaster are forced to shut down within two years.
  • The survival rate for companies without a disaster recovery plan is less than 10%.
  • Only 44% of businesses successfully recovered information after a recent data recovery event.
  • 53% of claimants never recoup the losses incurred by a disaster.

The survival rate for companies without a disaster recovery plan is less than 10%

What would it mean for your Company or IT Department if there was a disaster or interruption to your systems? DR doesn’t necessarily mean a major disaster, it could be as simple as a system failing and causing your core business system to be unavailable. Are you ready to recover from that?

So what do you need to be ready?

Most Companies or IT Departments have a BCP (Business Continuity Plan) documented. So they know what they should do if they encounter a disaster, but is it current, has it been tested and more importantly, is the DR environment accessible and will it be able to process what is required? Are the same staff that are handling your day to day operations ready to also support and maintain the DR environment, which in most cases is just as complicated and resource intensive as your normal production environment.

You need a Managed Service Provider that understands what it takes to keep on top of your requirements and can assure you that when you have a disaster or interruption there is an environment that is ready and available. To ensure your provider is in this position, here are some:

You need a Managed Service Provider that understands what it takes to keep on top of your requirements

Basic questions you should be asking:

  • Replication – Is my data being replicated to the DR environment on a regular basis? This should be at least daily via a scheduled backup, or at least every 4 hours via SAN to SAN replication.
  • Managed Environment – Is the DR environment being managed to ensure that DR is a mirror of production?
  • Monitored – Is the DR environment being monitored for errors or issues? Are you receiving daily updates or emails to let you know that replication has completed?
  • Patched – Is the DR environment being patched and updated in line with the production environment?

Harbour IT provides failover for your in-house systems, enabling you to rapidly restore your business data. By replicating key systems or your entire data centre, you optimise availability for your users, customers and business partners should disaster strike.
