Creating an agile and secure IT environment with performance and scalability

People have long spoken of “digital moments of truth” but this is now more real than ever.

Whether you’re the financial institution which had to shift its customer call centre from one country to another overnight when COVID-19 hit – like one of our customers – or a restaurant that needed to create an online order and delivery option, it’s those with flexible capabilities who were well placed to quickly integrate new services and stabilise their organisational performance.

Yet as time passes, what’s becoming even more clear is that the pandemic is just the latest milestone in an ongoing shift towards an era in which organisations’ competitiveness will be defined by factors like scalability and performance. Again and again, I’ve heard from CEOs whose eyes have been opened wide to the need to get these core platforms in place to be able to respond to disruption better in the future.

Scaffolding for success and scale

From more quickly meeting users’ changing needs, to enhancing mobility and productivity; from keeping data safe and available, to seamlessly scaling business critical applications; high performance IT is increasingly considered to be the foundation needed to support this resilience and adaptability – all while optimising cost and reducing the burden of maintenance.

But what does this look like in practice?

Enhanced performance can be delivered via technologies such as:

  • Infrastructure-as-a-service that creates flexibility in the infrastructure layer, allowing rapid adaptation without large and costly investments every time.
  • Microservices that do the same for the application layer, breaking code into independent services that run as separate processes, increasing application resilience, scalability and time to market for new features.
  • Software defined networking that that creates scalability in the network layer, offering a highly flexible, agile way to adapt to growing bandwidth requirements.

By enabling organisations to quickly strip down and ramp up their systems, processes and infrastructure, these scalable, flexible, and high performing technologies are proving invaluable for those seeking readiness and agility amid rapid change.

A holistic perspective

Of course, the reality is that CIOs today are just as concerned with efficiency as they are with performance. Getting more from what you’ve got is your defensive strategy that will ensure you have both the financial and time resources to make additional investment in your offensive strategy – performance.

The good news is that high performing IT often not only comes with the added benefit of allowing businesses to shift costs from capex to opex, but also to shift expensive and inefficient maintenance work away from internal IT teams. This not only cuts costs but provides the opportunity for IT to refocus their energy working on what can truly set the organisation apart.
